Coventry Sphinx F.C. Map

Founded in 1946 as a works team for Armstrong Siddeley, Coventry Sphinx Football Club has come a long way from its industrial origins. Originally known as Armstrong Siddeley Motors Football Club, the club was renamed Sphinx Football Club in 1960 before adopting its current name upon promotion to the Midland Combination Premier Division in the mid-1990s. The club is now a member of the Northern Premier League Division One Midlands and plays its home matches at Sphinx Drive in Coventry, West Midlands.

From Works Team to Non-League Contenders

Coventry Sphinx were among the founder members of the Coventry Alliance, competing in that league until 1993 when they stepped up to Division Two of the Midland Combination. Promotion followed swiftly – a fourth-place finish in their debut season was enough to reach Division One, and a runners-up finish in 1994-95 brought them to the Premier Division. The club then recorded back-to-back runners-up finishes in 1995-96 and 2001-02, with the 2001-02 campaign also bringing the Midland Combination Challenge Cup. Further Challenge Cup success came in 2004-05, a season that again ended in a runners-up placing, as did 2005-06. The Premier Division title finally arrived in 2006-07, along with the Tony Allden Cup, the Coventry Charity Cup, and the Birmingham FA Midweek Floodlit Cup – a remarkably productive year for the club. Promotion to the Midland Alliance followed, and in 2009-10 Coventry Sphinx won the Midland Alliance League Cup, defeating Westfields 3-1 in the final. When the Midland Alliance merged with the Midland Combination in 2014 to form the Midland League, the club became part of the Premier Division. At the end of 2020-21, Coventry Sphinx were transferred to the United Counties League Premier Division South, which they won in 2022-23 to earn promotion to the Northern Premier League Division One Midlands.

Sphinx Drive and Notable Records

The club’s ground on Sphinx Drive took on its current name in 1995. During the mid-1990s a new stand was constructed and inaugurated with a friendly against a Coventry City side. The record attendance at the ground is 935, set during a Midland League Premier Division match against Hereford on 26 April 2016. In cup competitions, the club’s best FA Cup run reached the third qualifying round in 2009-10, while an FA Vase quarter-final appearance in 2007-08 remains the furthest Coventry Sphinx have progressed in that competition.
