Sitting just west of Coventry city centre, Spon End is a suburb whose character has been shaped as much by sport and infrastructure as by its older street connections. The area borders Earlsdon and Chapelfields, and was historically linked to the city centre via Spon Street until the construction of the Coventry Inner Ring Road severed that route, cutting Spon Street in two.
Sport and Landmarks
The main road through Spon End passes Butts Park Arena, which opened in 2004 as the home ground of Coventry Rugby Football Club. The ground also hosts Coventry United and Coventry United L.F.C., who play as tenants of the rugby club, and an all-weather pitch has been installed on site. Coventry Bears rugby league club were tenants at the arena until 2022. Alongside the ground, a Premier Inn hotel occupies a building that previously housed City College Coventry, an institution formerly known as Coventry Technical College and commonly referred to as “The Butts”. That same building contains The Albany Theatre, a community arts centre. Positioned between the hotel and the rugby ground is the headquarters of Ofqual, the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation.
Transport and the River Sherbourne
The railway line running between Coventry and Nuneaton crosses the River Sherbourne at Spon End Viaduct. From there, the river continues through the area beneath Spon Bridge, flows through a post-war housing estate, and passes under Vignoles Bridge before entering a culvert at the edge of the city centre. Two footballers connected to Spon End, Arthur Brown and Albert Brown, both went on to play for Aston Villa.
