Sitting roughly 2.3 miles south of Coventry city centre, Finham occupies a triangular patch of land on the border between the West Midlands county and Warwick District. Its northern edge follows the Kenpas Highway (A45), its southeastern boundary runs along the A46, and its southwestern side traces Green Lane for much of its length. That same Green Lane is shared along Finham’s northern edge with the neighbouring suburb of Styvechale (also written Stivichall). To the southeast, part of Finham’s boundary meets the Warwickshire village of Baginton, while the village of Stoneleigh lies to the south, where St Martins Road meets the Finham Brook. Within a mile to the south sits the hamlet of King’s Hill, at Coventry’s southernmost point.
History and Administration
Finham was historically part of the parish of Stoneleigh. The local government reorganisation of 1974 transferred the majority of Finham’s residences to Coventry City Council, though the parts of Finham lying south of Green Lane and Howes Lane remain within the ceremonial county of Warwickshire. Finham Parish Council itself was not created until 1 April 2016, giving the area its own formal parish body after many decades under wider council jurisdiction. Finham is considered one of Coventry’s more prosperous districts, particularly the area east of Leamington Road, and it draws many professionals who work in Warwick, Leamington Spa, and Kenilworth – all within easy reach given its position on the southern edge of the city.
Schools, Library, and Local Concerns
Finham Park School, a large comprehensive with specialisms in mathematics and computing that also functions as a teacher training school, sits on Green Lane. It was built on former farmland on the western side of that road and completed in 1970. Also on Green Lane is Finham Primary School, which was relocated from its earlier site on Brentwood Avenue and almost entirely rebuilt in the mid-1980s. A local library operates Monday to Saturday. In March 2009, a public meeting at Finham Primary School addressed a proposed housing development that would extend from Green Lane South, adjacent to King’s Hill hamlet, running alongside the A46 toward Stoneleigh Road. Because the site falls just beyond the Coventry boundary, it would fall under Warwickshire County. Residents raised concerns about traffic volumes on surrounding roads and the limited public transport available in the area, and a petition and a Finham Residents Association website were both established in response to the plans.
