Roughly 2.5 miles from the city centre, Bell Green occupies the north-east corner of Coventry in the West Midlands. The area is predominantly residential in character, with its built environment shaped largely by post-war planning decisions that defined much of Coventry’s outer neighbourhoods.
Riley Square and Local Amenities
Riley Square is the commercial and community centre of Bell Green, bringing together a variety of shops surrounded by blocks of flats. The public library that once operated within the Square has since moved to the Park Edge Community Hub, while Bell Green health centre sits just outside the Square’s perimeter. The area has historically faced high levels of social and economic deprivation, and has seen problems with low-level crime and antisocial behaviour, though its crime rate remains relatively lower than those recorded in neighbouring districts such as Wood End and Manor House.
Dewis House
The Riley Square estate was constructed between 1957 and 1965, designed by the City Architect’s Department under Arthur Ling. The most prominent structure within the estate is Dewis House, a 17-storey residential tower standing approximately 51 metres (167 ft) tall. Completed in 1965, the block contains 94 individual flats and remains one of the more visible landmarks in this part of Coventry.
Henley College Coventry
Henley College Coventry stood on Henley Road at the edge of Bell Green, having been built during the 1960s. At its peak, the college provided education to more than 5,000 part-time students and around 1,600 full-time students. The college closed in 2021, and its buildings were subsequently demolished following a serious fire in the refurbished structure during the summer of 2025.
